Although often overlooked amid the legendary companies that were founded in and around Silicon Valley, many of these satellite operations boast thousands of employees and plan to keep growing. Their typically well paid workers often computer engineers and other tech specialists not only boost the local economy by buying homes, eating at restaurants and paying taxes here, they help infuse the region Air Max Thea Singapore with a diversity of ideas.
While SAP has sales offices around the world, its Bay Area operations are different because "every part of the company is represented here," Becher said. "It's almost a company within a company."

Despite this area's relative high cost of living, he said he loves San Jose's recently expanded airport and added, "Silicon Valley is arguably the center of the universe when it comes to technical resources and universities, with Stanford and Cal. There's just a lot here."

"It's fascinating how many companies from all over the world are seeking out an address here," said Tracey Grose, vice president of the Bay Area Council Economic Institute. "It's huge. When you bring people together with different perspectives and experiences, it opens the opportunity for something new."
Nonetheless, nearly two dozen businesses headquartered outside the Bay Area agreed to disclose some facts about their local tech operations, many of which have been built up by buying other businesses here. Their work forces alone, which total nearly 47,000 people, provide a partial picture of the massive impact such companies are having on the region, as they try to soak up some of Silicon Valley's tech magic.
"The people that understand this are in Silicon Valley and that's what we're trying to attract," said King, adding that it's essential for the company to be here. "Flying your employees in is not the way to do this."
Another example is Walmart. Aside from employees at its big box stores, the Bentonville, Ark. discount retailer has about 1,500 e commerce specialists here, mostly in San Bruno. And in October, it expects to open a Sunnyvale e commerce office and add hundreds more workers, said Jeremy King, a senior vice president.

Although it had a modest engineering unit in Silicon Valley in the 1970s, it has greatly expanded its operations through several acquisitions including its purchase of Read Rite of Fremont in 2003, Komag of San Jose in 2007 and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies of San Jose last year. It also has been busy hiring engineers locally and continues to do so, said CEO Stephen Milligan.
Battling over market share with Redwood City based Oracle (ORCL), SAP has been determined to establish its own presence in Silicon Valley, in part through a series of multibillion dollar acquisitions. Alex Carey, a spokesman for Dallas based AT said it has about 18,000 workers in Northern California, but he wouldn't reveal where they were located. Although spokeswoman Colleen Haikes said IBM has "thousands of employees in the Bay Area," she added, "we just don't provide specific numbers."
