"I'm really looking forward to representing Cobb County, not just the Chamber," said Britton, who lives near Smyrna with his wife, Pam. "I love this community, and I want to take all of these things that we have in motion today and continue them."
By the end of that July, Britton had retired from Wells Fargo. But shortly thereafter, he was given the opportunity to help launch Community Southern Bank, near the Cobb Galleria Centre, and accepted the position of senior vice president and community banking manager, which he still has today.
Britton said Chamber bylaws have been changed this year and will likely undergo further modifications after last year's change of leadership fell apart. Former WellStar Health System CEO Gregory Simone was in line to be the 2011 chairman but gave up the post after he was unexpectedly fired. Garcia stayed on another year as chairman instead, but because that was not allowed under Chamber bylaws, the bylaws needed to be reviewed, Britton said.
Britton said he has been involved with the Cobb Chamber since 1983, when he was working for Decatur Federal Bank in Cobb County, which is now Wells Fargo Bank. He has held several other leadership roles for the Cobb Chamber and was a member of the 1992 Leadership Cobb class.

I wish I could say that the chamber was something more than a vehicle for the government contract welfare whoring business class to suck the life out of taxpayers. But, they are no different than (in fact are probably worse than) the welfare queens that we all have a true distaste for.
Britton said he came to Cobb in 1981 after his parents, retired Army Col. Thomas Britton Jr. and his wife, Nancy, moved to Smyrna, where they continue to live today. Britton was leaving his studies in business and mass media at the University of Akron, and said he wanted to be close to his family.

Britton saw his doctor when his jaw went numb. His doctor referred him to a cardiologist, who discovered Britton had seven blockages. The next day, Dr. William Cooper, director of cardiac surgery for WellStar Health System, performed five bypasses on Britton.

For his part, Britton says he will have a lot to learn when he takes the reins.
But on Feb. 3, 2009, Britton had a brush with death, which prompted him to re evaluate his life and career.

Tony Britton, senior vice president of Community Southern Bank, will be the next chairman of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, starting in January. Britton said over the course of 2011, Cobb has seen 26 new economic development projects, adding 3,000 more jobs and resulting in over a quarter billion dollars in economic impact. Britton said the Cobb Chamber has about 2,700 members, and he hopes to increase membership through his chairmanship.
"We have a renewed focus on economic development, and where we're headed is so positive," Britton said. "Economic development is critical right now, and it probably shouldn't have taken an economic meltdown to bring attention to the importance of it, but it's something we really need to focus on. Cobb has limited space and infrastructure, so we have to start asking, 'How can we maximize what we have? How can we get on the radar and keep moving forward?'"
for other changes that may be needed and added that the Transportation SPLOST currently set for a vote this summer; the Chamber's economic development plan and study, Cobb's Competitive EDGE, currently set to be wrapped up by early February; and a total rebranding of the Chamber will be three other large milestones during his tenure as chairman.
Just one month before CSB launched in January 2010, Britton said he got a phone call from outgoing Cobb Chamber Chairman Rob Garcia that a group of past chairs elected him to be the next chairman in 2012. Britton said the future chair is nominated and elected by a committee of former chairs. If their choice accepts, he or she is taken through a three year process of serving as vice chair elect, then vice chair, then chair.
"I thought I was in great shape. I have no family history, so it really was the shock of my life," Britton said. "I was a step away from death."
But on Jan. 9, Britton will take on a new role, as the chairman of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.
"His tireless effort to grow the business community over many years is quite impressive," Connell said. "(Britton) is one of the most ethical and caring individuals I have ever known, and he is ready to commit the time and effort to help this community grow."
"I know I will have many lessons in politics and media 101," Britton said. "But I am what I am, and I think I've done a good job of being mindful, caring and knowledgeable. My passion and energy is around giving back, and I have been extremely fortunate to be involved and helping initiatives throughout the years.
Cobb Chamber CEO David Connell said Britton was selected as chair because of 'his proven leadership skills and commitment to the Cobb community."
Britton said he will officially be voted into the position by the Chamber Board of Directors at its meeting immediately following the Jan. 9 First Monday Breakfast. That board will also change with his new leadership, shrinking from 23 executive board members to 12 of his choosing.
