A man who was sentenced Tuesday for running an illegal gambling operation bought a deputy a truck and paid for his children's school activities in exchange for tips that helped him keep his gambling operation going, his lawyer said.
Crane said Khalil gave the government substantial assistance in its investigation.
In court Tuesday it was revealed that Sheriff Steve Loftis contacted the FBI when he learned that a deputy was compromised and said, "Follow this wherever it goes."
Khalil said, " I'm sorry. What I did was a mistake. In a way, I'm glad I got arrested."
Izzat Khalil returned to court Wednesday to try to have his bond reinstated. He has been in prison since last May when his bond was revoked because investigators said he continued to run his gambling operation after he was charged. If he had been given bond, he would have had several weeks with his family and to get his affairs in order before beginning his sentence, but the judge denied bond, leaving him in prison. 35 years ago, had previously pleaded guilty to adventuring in lotteries and paid a fine of $100 or less on each.
