firefighter with the Contra Costa Fire Protection District. Firefighters from Contra Costa on Sunday night assisted the California Highway Patrol in trying to save Nunes, Dong said.
The station's American flag was flying at half staff Monday. A few firefighters who walked in and out of the station's garage doors kept their heads bowed and did not speak.
Nunes had been riding the tractor when relatives became concerned that he had not returned, fire officials said. He was later found by a CHP helicopter and his body was escorted by police and fire to the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office, Dong said.

Nunes was a jokester among his comrades, Dong said. "He loved to imitate other firefighters to make us laugh. His smile would light up the room. This city and the department will miss him and his endearing smile."
Nunes is survived by two adult children and several brothers, some who work as firefighters in Contra Costa County.
Nunes, who was also a water rescue swimmer, was also a private pilot who loved to fly. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and was friends with many of the players, Dong said.
In Berkeley, Nunes worked at Station 7 on Shasta Avenue in the Berkeley hills.
Dong said Nunes was in charge of maintaining the fitness equipment at the city's fire stations and "the thing that lit him up the most was showing the fire station and fire engine to kids who would come by the station."
Dong said he believes Nunes, who was off duty, was preparing the property for either the upcoming fire season or an expected heavy storm this week.
"We deal with life and death situations on a daily basis," Dong said. "It's harder for us when it's one of your own.
